Interior spaces is a unit about the inside of anything, but it is shown in a creative way. When i planned this project I wanted to do something crazy like a mug with eyeballs in it or a dishwasher with fish swimming inside. I decided to do a motel with fish swimming in the windows. I chose this idea because I thought the perspective was really interesting but ,as it turns out, there were a lot of areas with negative space and it was very challenging to fill them I did not know what to do with them. My process when making my motel hallway was to sketch out the hallway first, then I painted it in watercolor, and lastly I outlined it in my preffered drawing tool. Some of my challenges as I said was the negative space, but also coloring this piece was just as challenging. I didn't know what to color anything. I just started to lay colors down, which sucked because I don't like to do that a lot. I think something that also made this project difficult was my lack of motivation. I din't have much motivation in finishing this project and I don't why. I think next time I need to choose to do something that I think is more interesting and that I will enjoy doing more. My successes in this project were my fish and the water design. I am proud that my fish came out so well. I looked up fish and drew them just to make them look really good and I'm glad that paid off. I also looked up a water design because I wanted that "Chinese water art" look for the water and that also came out really well which makes me really glad. During this unit I learned how to keep working even if you don't like what you're doing or have no motivation. I think my drawing skills grew because I had drew actual real looking fish for the first time and they llok pretty good to me.
For our second piece we had to create something that had to deal with things we see or use everyday. For my piece I chose a couch from my living room at hoe that I always sit on after school. Now, going into this project I knew that if I did an everyday object, I wanted to put a little twist on the whole thing. I planned out three sketches one of a couch with an 80's look, one with a couch under a street light, and one of a couch underwater. I ended up choosing the 80's looking couch, which I am glad I stuck with. I chose the 80's couch because I wasn't feeling sure if I could execute the other ideas right, I was afraid I would mess up and create chaos on a canvas. I wasn't sure if I could paint an underwater look or a street light look and make it look presentable. (Seeing my work now I think I would have done okay, though.) To create my project I used layers a lot. I painted based colors first to know where everything was going to go. Then I added black to my base colors and painted the shadows. Sometimes, the shadow layer with black was to dark so I would just add another layer of the base color and the shading looked a lot better, an example of where I used this technique is on the front pillows. After shadows, I painted the background and then I painted the patterns and after that, the shading for the patterns (which was very tricky!). Some challenges I faced were the background, using transparent colors, and shading. The background was challenging because I wasn't sure if I wanted to color it purple and so I tried to paint different colors but they were transparent and let all the other colors I tried show through. In the end I still painted it purple. Painting with transparent colors was a challenge because they don't cover mistakes and they can't be used for layers because they show everything underneath. I overcame this by adding white to the colors I was trying to use and it layering them on themselves. An example of this is when you look at the patterns everywhere. Shading was hard when I was trying to shade only the pattern alone because I had to be very careful on not smudging everything and staying in my lines. My successes were my color choices and my patterns. My color choices are a success because they make my couch pop a lot, especially because the colors fit together really well. My patterns were a success because I executed them very neatly and the colors for them are really vibrant. With acrylic paint I learned how to paint neater when I want to have a more sharp looking piece. I also learned how to paint with certain colors that I want and how to make them pop. During this project I grew in many ways. From making more 3 dimensional art, knowing where all my shadows should go, and by creating something so different from my other art I've done.
